Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold clinched victory for England over Switzerland, securing a semi-final spot with a calmly-taken penalty after a decisive save from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Alexander-Arnold, from West Derby, took England's fifth spot-kick, finding the corner to secure a spot in the semis after coming on as a late substitute. Beforehand, Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a vital save from Manuel Akanji's first penalty for the Swiss.

Liverpool right-back Alexander-Arnold was once again overlooked for a starting place by Gareth Southgate, and England laboured for much of the match before going behind to a Breel Embolo goal. However Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka equalised quickly, and held his nerve in the shootout himself.

It was England's first shoot-out win since beating the same opposition in the Nations League third-placed play-off five years ago in Portugal.

Pickford was the hero then, just as he was on Saturday night as Gareth Southgate's 100th match ended with a victory that sets up a Dortmund clash against Turkey or the Netherlands on Wednesday.
