Trey Nyoni features and Tyler Morton scores as Liverpool secures impressive Arsenal victory
Liverpool U21s won 3-0 away at Arsenal with Barry Lewtas' side putting in another impressive performance. Trey Nyoni was in the starting XI with Tyler Morton getting himself on the scoresheet just under a week after he netted against Derby County.
Center-back Amara Nallo scored the first goal of the game for Liverpool in the first half with Morton putting the young Reds 2-0 up just before half-time as he started and then finished a good move. Before the hour mark, Ranel Young put the result beyond doubt for Liverpool with just over a third of the match remaining.
Goalkeeper Harvey Davies was then sent off for Liverpool with around 15 minutes of normal time left to play. He was given a caution for timewasting before he then picked up a second booking immediately, seemingly for sarcastically applauding the decision.
Wolves camp hit by virus before Liverpool game as Arne Slot's men could face academy players EXCLUSIVE: 'Liverpool should have one contract priority above all else - and it isn't Trent Alexander-Arnold'
The match finished 3-0 so that sending off didn't harm Liverpool in this game. The Reds' U21s have now won four out of their first five matches at the start of the new Premier League 2 campaign.
Nyoni didn't feature for Liverpool's U21s against Harrogate Town in the EFL Trophy last Tuesday with Arne Slot hinting that he could have played a part in the Carabao Cup victory over West Ham the following day. The decision was taken for Nyoni to play here instead, though, with the Reds keen to be careful with the 17-year-old midfielder's minutes and he continues to develop.
"He is a really young player who only just became 17 but with a lot of talent," Slot said during his pre-West Ham press conference. "When he played against Sevilla, he even scored a goal.
"So he is a talent but only being a talent is not enough to play on a regular basis. He needs playing time to develop and that's why sometimes you feel you might need him but you need him to play games. Training with the players we have helps him to develop. We have taken good care of him but he has already showed some good signs."
Liverpool's U21s now face a 10-day wait for their next competitive game. That is away at Manchester United on Sunday, October 6.
