'I Tried Nose Threading, AKA the "Lunchtime Nose Job." Here's How It Affected My Confidence'
A procedure called the PDO thread lift is being billed as the non-surgical answer to rhinoplasty. Known as nose threading (or 'the lunchtime nose job') it involves using threads to lift and subtly re-shape the nose.
But is it painful, is it safe and does it actually work?
WH Editor-In-Chief Claire Sanderson tried out the procedure to see if going under the needle can restore her fractured self-esteem. Below, she shares her experience with nose threading.
'I Tried "Nose Threading," Here's My Honest Review'
The year was 1992. I was 14, and the sixth form boys playing cricket on the school field might as well have been Lions rugby players to my friends and I as we sunbathed on the sidelines. Out of nowhere, a hard ball came hurtling towards us. It bounced off he sun-baked field before hitting the left-hand side of my nose. There was blood, a shattered bone and a trip to A&E confirmed that my septum would never be the same again.
With time, I got used to my new nose – the bone now deviated off to the right – along with breathing through one nostril. In fact, it wasn’t until I joined Women’s Health four years ago – and was confronted with my own image more than ever – that insecurities about my nose resurfaced.
Conversations with aestheticians confirmed that my reflection was changing, too; the collagen depletion and bone-thinning that are a normal part of ageing make the nose more prominent. In my case, the deviation of the bone was increasingly obvious. I considered rhinoplasty, but ruled it out (pricey, long recovery time) in favour of a procedure that popped into my inbox.'
How Much Do Nose Threads Cost?
Dubbed the ‘lunchtime nose job’, the PDO thread lift, which costs £750, is quick (you’re in and out in an hour) and relatively pain-free, while delivering dramatic results.
‘Polydioxanone thread is a suture material, meaning it’s used in surgery to close wounds,’ explains Dr Mahsa Saleki, founder and medical director of SAS Aesthetics and former NHS cardiothoracic surgeon. She explains that the threads bind to collagen-like Velcro, lifting the skin in the process, with the average person needing just three.
‘Your nose was more complex,’ Dr Saleki tells me, after completing the procedure in her London practice one Wednesday lunchtime. ‘I had to transpose your soft tissue to the side of your nose where bone was lacking post-fracture, so we needed six threads to hold the tissue in place.’
Is Nose Threading painful?
The threads are inserted via a single entry point beneath the tip of your nose – it’s more uncomfortable than sore – and when Dr Saleki handed me a mirror, I couldn’t believe the difference. I saw my nose, only smaller and more symmetrical.
What Are the Side-effects of Nose Threading?
I was warned that swelling and bruising is normal (I didn’t experience much of either), and told not to do any strenuous exercise, wear sunglasses or sleep on my front, to avoid any trauma to the nose and try to keep my hands away for two weeks. The main post-procedure sensation I had, which lasted about a month, was tightness of the skin on and around my nose.
How Long Does a Nose Thread Lift Last?
This solution isn’t permanent: the threads begin to break down after three to six months, with your nose returning to normal by 12 (although there are threads that last for up to three years).
It’s effective – I’ll definitely have the procedure again. I’ll also avoid all cricket games and any chance of a repeat of that fateful day in 1992.
