The agent of new Arsenal signing Leandro Trossard has revealed how Tottenham’s dawdling over a transfer led to the Belgian quickly swapping one half of north London for the other.

The Gunners beat Spurs to the signing of Trossard last week when the 28-year-old wrapped up a £27million switch to The Emirates to further boost Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes.

However, things could have worked out very differently, if Tottenham had been more proactive in their chase.

Antonio Conte’s men were the first to actually lodge a bid for Trossard, but their £12m offer was quickly rebuffed.

And now, speaking to the media on Saturday, Trossard’s agent Josy Comhair shed light on the differences between the way the two north London rivals went about their business.

He said: “Spurs were in contact with us for the last two weeks. But it was we want him, but wait this, wait that. Wednesday we got in touch with Arsenal – 24 hours later they had an agreement.”

Those comments appear to reek of Daniel Levy trying to get Trossard on board for as little as possible. The Tottenham chairman will have been banking on Brighton wanting rid before the window closes and selling cheaply.

But for Arsenal, they were very clearly determined not to be beaten to the punch again, after Chelsea jumped in to steal Mykhaylo Mudryk from their clutches at the 11th hour.

Mikel Areta is known to be a big admirer of Trossard, who scored a hat-trick for Brighton at Anfield earlier this season. And Gunners fans are likely to get an early glimpse of the player in Sunday’s huge clash with Manchester United.

The Belgium international was signed in time to be eligible to feature against the Red Devils. However, the best he can hope for is a place on the bench, as Arteta sticks with his normal front three. Indeed, Eddie Nketiah is set to continue as deputy for the injured Gabriel Jesus.

And speaking ahead of his potential debut, Trossard told Arsenal’s official website: “It helps me that I’m versatile and that I can play in different positions. They’re looking forward to working with me and vice versa. I’m really excited to work with them and I think Mikel is a top coach.

“I like to be in the pocket behind the striker. On the wings, I can explore myself as well. I’m comfortable in either of those positions. But if I were to choose, behind the striker – but it all depends on the system.

“I think I’m good in 1v1s. I’m composed in the box, so if I get chances, I can finish them off. I can hopefully help the team to win tough games – I’m great in tight spaces.”

So, as table-topping Arsenal continue to seemingly sweep all before them, Spurs are currently in freefall. They are also yet to make a signing this month, despite the obvious need for three or four new faces.
