Troup Softball continues torrid streak by downing West Rusk, 8-2

Mar. 23—TROUP — The Troup High School softball team is on a roll.

The Lady Tigers extended their win streak to five games Saturday afternoon by surpassing West Rusk, 8-2.

During its last-five outings, Troup has outscored its district rivals by a combined score of 65-3.

The Lady Tigers (14-6, 4-1) are in sole possession of second place in the District 16-3A standings, and trail Jefferson by a game.

Troup's ace, Taylor Gillispie, survived a shaky start — the game was tied 2-2 after one inning of play — to toss a one-hitter. The righty struck out 17 Lady Raiders and walked two in nailing down the complete-game win in the circle.

West Rusk's lone hit was a double by Dustyn Redden.

A Shiloh Sluder double in the second inning drove Lili Priest in to score what turned out to be the winning run from third base for the Lady Tigers in the bottom of the second stanza. Priest led the inning off by reaching base on an error on the Lady Raider shortstop.

Troup scored two runs in the bottom of the second and led the rest of the afternoon.

Sluder went 2-4 with a RBI, Hannah Cearley doubled and knocked in a pair of runs and Sydnie Dickey stroked a double accounted for a first-inning two-base hit and a RBI.

Chipping in a single and driving in a run apiece were London Driggers, MaKayla Spencer and Bailey Blanton.

At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday Troup will visit Arp.
