Preston North End have confirmed they have beaten “fantastic competition” to sign striker Troy Parrott on loan from Tottenham for the season.

The 20-year-old has emerged in recent seasons as one of the brightest talents in the Spurs academy. Following his arrival at the club in 2017, he progressed through the ranks impressively.

Jose Mourinho handed Parrott his Premier League debut in December 2019. The Republic of Ireland forward remained on the fringes of the first team in 2019/20, but struggled for minutes.

From there, he has taken successive stints out on loan at Millwall, Ipswich Town and MK Dons.

But after shining in League One with Ipswich and MK Dons, he has secured a return to the Championship with Preston, while also signing a new Tottenham contract until 2025.

“I’m buzzing to get going, to come in and see the place, meet the lads and get going really,” Parrott told his new club’s official website.

“I spoke to the manager first of all. I like the sound of how the team wants to play, they want to create a lot of chances which for me is a no brainer really, and obviously the Irish boys here also helps.

“I’ve been speaking to Browney [Alan Browne] and Robbie [Brady] and just asking what it’s like around the place and they’ve had nothing but good things to say, so I’m happy to be here.”

Meanwhile, Preston manager Ryan Lowe revealed that his side have beat off a number of top clubs to sign Parrott.

“Troy’s one I’ve monitored for some time; he had a fantastic season last year for MK Dons,” Lowe added.

“I watched him play for Ireland against Scotland in the summer when he scored a fantastic goal in the Nations League.

“His work ethic is fantastic, his hold-up play is very good for the style he is, but ultimately we want Troy to score goals for us.

“We’ve beaten some fantastic competition to get him. I think we sold it to him with the style of play, the identity and what we want to achieve, and probably a little bit of help from a few of the Irish boys as well.

“I’m really pleased to get him on board, he’s going to be a fantastic addition.”

Tottenham man progressing well

This may be Parrott‘s fourth loan spell of his Spurs career, but he is learning all the time and will hope to return to north London next summer with more goals, assists and experience under his belt.

He learned the tough lessons football has to offer in the 2020/21 campaign when he suffered an ankle injury which restricted his game time at Millwall.

However, he then found impressive form at MK Dons, scoring nine League One goals and assisting eight others.

Parrott will now look to take the momentum from last season back into the Championship.

He also already has 15 Republic of Ireland caps, so is quickly becoming a leader on the international stage despite his tender years.
