Boris Johnson wishes Donald Trump a 'speedy recovery' as president tests positive for coronavirus

HERTFORD, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 04: US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson onstage during the annual NATO heads of government summit on December 4, 2019 in Watford, England. France and the UK signed the Treaty of Dunkirk in 1947 in the aftermath of WW2 cementing a mutual alliance in the event of an attack by Germany or the Soviet Union. The Benelux countries joined the Treaty and in April 1949 expanded further to include North America and Canada followed by Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. This new military alliance became the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The organisation grew with Greece and Turkey becoming members and a re-armed West Germany was permitted in 1955. This encouraged the creation of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact delineating the two sides of the Cold War. This year marks the 70th anniversary of NATO. (Photo by Steve Parsons-WPA Pool/Getty Images)

Boris Johnson has wished Donald Trump a “speedy recovery” after the president tested positive for coronavirus.

Trump, and first lady Melania, are self-isolating after testing positive in the early hours of Friday, following a positive test from one of his closest aides.

White House aide Hope Hicks returned a positive test on Thursday.

He joins Boris Johnson on the list of world leaders who have been infected with the coronavirus.

Boris Johnson, who fell gravely ill after catching COVID-19 in March, wished the couple to a speedy recovery.

Speaking on Sky News, housing secretary Robert Jenrick said: “All of us want to send our best wishes to President Trump, the first lady and the Trump family and wish them a speedy recovery.

“We know what it’s like to have, in our case a prime minister who tested positive for COVID, and setting aside politics we all want to see him and his wife get better soon.

Jenrick added that the United States has a clear succession protocol should it be needed.

“In the US they’ve got a very clear protocol haven’t they, with the vice president, should that be necessary,” Jenrick added.

Other British MPs have also sent messages of support to Trump, including former Chancellor Sajid Javid, who urged people to put politics aside.

Trump is thought to be at higher risk of hospital admission from COVID-19 due to his age, gender and weight.

The 74-year-old falls into the high risk group because he is male – with men around twice as likely to die from coronavirus as women.

However, his biggest risk factor is his age, with experts concluding that age is by far the strongest predictor of an infected person’s risk of dying.

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says people aged 65 to 74 have a five times higher risk of hospital admission with coronavirus compared with those aged 18 to 29.

For people aged 75 to 84, the risk of needing hospital admission jumps to eight times higher, with a 220 times higher risk of death.

Trump’s doctor, Sean Conley, told reporters in June that he is healthy. Conley also reported that Trump weighed 17st 6lb (110.7kg).

While waiting for the results of his test, Trump said he had found it difficult to socially distance while meeting members of the armed forces.

He told Fox News: “It’s very hard when you’re with soldiers, when you’re with airmen, when you’re with the marines, and with the police officers, I’m with them so much.
