Trump indictment – live: Trump indicted over classified documents as DeSantis campaign rebuked for Fauci images
Donald Trump was indicted on seven charges relating to the storage of classified national defence documents dating from his presidency at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.
The 45th president of the United States will now appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday, his lawyer has since confirmed. Should he ultimately be convicted, he could face a maximum combined sentence of 100 years in prison.
Following the latest dramatic development to place his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination in jeopardy, Mr Trump insisted on Truth Social: “I am an innocent man”.
“The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax,” he seethed in a separate post.
The Department of Justice has been investigating the potential violation of the Espionage Act for some time but has so far not made any comment on the indictment.
Mr Trump’s rivals for the nomination have rallied behind him by criticising the “weaponisation of federal law enforcement”.
One of those is Florida governor Ron DeSantis, whose campaign has meanwhile been accused of sharing fake AI images of Mr Trump embracing Dr Anthony Fauci, in the hope of discrediting him.

Pence calls for immediate unsealing of indictment
17:53 , Oliver O'Connell
Speaking on the Hugh Hewitt radio show earlier today, former vice president Mike Pence called for the immediate unsealing of the indictment against former president Donald Trump.
Here’s what he said:
I think the Justice Department should immediately move to unseal the indictment. I think the sooner we bring the facts forward to the American people, the better. The American people have a right to know of the basis for both the facts and the law underpinning the unprecedented indictment of a former president of the United States under federal law. So I would call for that, and am doing so now on your broadcast. I truly do believe while I believe there's a hearing on Tuesday, and this information comes out then, look, we need to do everything that we can to give the American people the facts in this case and end the rampant speculation as the media is beginning its latest rush to judgment. The American people are entitled to the facts and the law in this case.
Jailhouse Rock? Trump followed his furious indictment announcement with a DJ set

At about 8.30pm on Thursday night, Donald Trump donned a red MAGA cap and played an outdoor DJ set at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey, according to a new report.
Mr Trump, who earlier broke the news of his own indictment in a Truth Social post, put on his favorite tunes by Elvis Presley, Luciano Pavarotti and James Brown on an iPad on the patio of Bedminster’s main building, sources told the New York Times on condition of anonymity.
The former president had received a call about 90 minutes earlier from one of his attorneys informing him he had been indicted while huddled with his close political advisers in an office near a poolside cottage at the Bedminster private golf club, according to the Times.

Romney says Trump allegations are in line with actions that got him impeached twice
17:15 , Gustaf Kilander
Like all Americans, Mr. Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence. The government has the burden of proving its charges beyond a reasonable doubt and securing a unanimous verdict by a South Florida jury.By all appearances, the Justice Department and special counsel have exercised due care, affording Mr. Trump the time and opportunity to avoid charges that would not generally have been afforded to others.Mr. Trump brought these charges upon himself by not only taking classified documents, but by refusing to simply return them when given numerous opportunities to do so.These allegations are serious and if proven, would be consistent with his other actions offensive to the national interest, such as withholding defensive weapons from Ukraine for political reasons and failing to defend the Capitol from violent attack and insurrection.

Statement from former Trump lawyers Jim Trusty and John Rowley

This morning we tendered our resignations as counsel to President Trump, and we will no longer represent him on either the indicted case or the January 6 investigation. It has been an honor to have spent the last year defending him, and we know he will be vindicated in his battle against the Biden Administration's partisan weaponization of the American justice system. Now that the case has been filed in Miami, this is a logical moment for us to step aside and let others carry the cases through to completion. We have no plans to hold media appearances that address our withdrawals or any other confidential communications we've had with the President or his legal team.

Retired US Capitol Police Staff Sergeant Aquilino Gonell, who resigned in December, posted the video of Mr Trump’s announcement on Twitter.
“I call dibs on handcuffing him,” he tweeted.
Mr Gonell announced his resignation from the Capitol Police force on 12 December, citing how he sought to continue to recover “physically and mentally” from the injuries he incurred as he defended the US Capitol when supporters of Mr Trump stormed the building in an attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential results. Mr Gonell suffered injuries in his hands, shoulder, calf and foot.
Mr Gonell also tagged fellow Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn. The two men, as well as Washington DC Police Officer Daniel Hodges and retired officer Michael Fanone, all testified at the inaugural hearing of the House select committee that investigated the riot.

Some in Georgia GOP seek purity test as Trump appears at convention in aftermath of indictment
15:30 , AP
Georgia‘s state Republican convention gets underway Friday with Donald Trump still expected on Saturday, even as a right-wing party faction seeks to punish GOP officials it considers ideological traitors by banning them from future primary election ballots.
Trump could feed an air of vengeance after announcing Thursday that he’s been indicted on charges of mishandling classified documents, overshadowing party business and speakers including Republican presidential candidates Asa Hutchinson and Vivek Ramaswamy.
The proposal to ban candidates could be used to penalize elected Republican leaders including Gov. Brian Kemp or Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who crossed Trump by refusing the then-president’s demands to overturn his loss in the 2020 election. It also could be used against candidates who show insufficient purity on abortion or taxes.
Kemp, Raffensperger and some other officials are skipping the two-day gathering in Columbus.
The proposals could be squelched, with opponents saying primary election voters should decide who’s fit to be a Republican. While ideological purists try to move Republicans relentlessly to the right, pragmatists say that’s a strategy to lose general elections in battleground Georgia.

Trump boasts about having non-declassified papers in bombshell recording: ‘I have a big pile’

Donald Trump made the stunning admission that he held onto “secret” military information that he hadn’t declassified.
“As president, I could have declassified, but now I can’t,” Mr Trump said during the meeting in 2021 after he left office, according to a transcript obtained by CNN.
In the meeting, Mr Trump spoke about a classified Defence Department document regarding a supposed attack on Iran. The recording was obtained by prosecutors, in which Mr Trump states that he didn’t declassify the document he’s speaking about.
On Thursday, Mr Trump was indicted on seven counts in the probe led by special counsel Jack Smith into the ex-president’s handling of classified documents.
The indictment hasn’t been made fully public, meaning it’s not clear if any of those charges relate to the recording from 2021.

How Trump’s second indictment unfolded: A timeline of the investigation into Mar-a-Lago documents
14:30 , Joe Sommerlad
Donald Trump has been indicted on seven charges relating to the storage of classified national defence documents dating from his presidency at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.
The 45th president of the United States will now appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday 13 June, his lawyer has since confirmed. Should he ultimately be convicted, he could face a maximum combined sentence of 100 years in prison.
His resort home was raided by the FBI in August 2022 as part of a hunt for search papers and other government records that should never have left the White House when his presidency ended in January 2021, a dramatic move that came as a surprise to the general public.
However, legal filings have since shown that the investigation into possible violations of the Espionage Act that triggered that unprecedented action was months in the making.
The documents made clear that Trump had ample opportunity to return the material the government requested — and then subpoenaed — and revealed the sheer quantity of highly-sensitive documents he was keeping at the club.
Here is a timeline of notable developments in the case so far:

President Joe Biden on Thursday said Americans can trust that he has not interfered in the Justice Department’s independence despite claims to the contrary by former president Donald Trump, who is likely to be charged in a long-running probe over his alleged unlawful retention of national defence information.
Mr Biden made the comments at the tail end of a joint press conference alongside British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after being asked what he could say to convince Americans of the department’s independence and fairness amid a rash of attacks against it from Mr Trump.

What is the difference between being indicted and being charged?
10:45 , Joe Sommerlad
To put it as simply as possible, under the American legal system, an indictment is a formal notice that the state believes a person has committed a crime, whereas a charge is a formal accusation made by a governmental authority asserting that somebody has committed a crime.
But here’s Abe Asher with a much more comprehensive explanation.
What is an indictment? Here’s what Donald Trump is facing
What is the Espionage Act that Trump is being investigated under?
10:15 , Joe Sommerlad
What do the transgender whistleblower Chelsea Manning, the 1950s Soviet spy Julius Rosenberg and former president Donald Trump all have in common?
The answer, following the indictment arising from the discovery of classified documents at Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, is that all four have been investigated under suspicion of violating the Espionage Act of 1917.
When the FBI raided Mr Trump’s property last August, they were looking for items that might violate the Act, which regulates the handling of confidential documents relating to national security.
Most often used against spies, whistleblowers and government employees who leak documents to journalists, the Espionage Act carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.

After years of opposition, GOP set to encourage early voting, mail balloting
09:45 , Joe Sommerlad
After years of criticizing mail voting and so-called ballot harvesting as ripe for fraud, Republicans at the top of the party want to change course.
They are poised to launch aggressive get-out-the-vote campaigns for 2024 that employ just those strategies, attempting to match the emphasis on early voting Democrats have used for years to lock in many of their supporters well ahead of Election Day.
The goal is to persuade voters who support GOP candidates that early voting techniques are secure and to make sure they are able to return their ballots in time to be counted, thus putting less pressure on Election Day turnout efforts.

Now the GOP candidate field is likely set, what do we know?
08:45 , Oliver O'Connell
After a trio of new announcements this week, the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential field is all but set.
A handful of stragglers may jump in later, but as of now there are at least 10 high-profile Republican candidates officially seeking their party’s nomination. And with the announcement phase of the primary campaign largely over, several leading Republican contenders will gather in North Carolina this weekend to begin a more aggressive sorting period.
It will be a long road to the GOP’s national convention in Milwaukee next summer when Republican delegates across the country gather to finalize their nominee to run against President Joe Biden. Surprises are guaranteed. Fortunes will change. But as of now, every Republican White House hopeful is looking up at former President Donald Trump, who is the undisputed frontrunner in the crowded contest.

For many Southern Baptists, the only 2024 question is which GOP candidate to support
06:45 , Oliver O'Connell
Southern Baptists form a core part of the white evangelical Christian bloc that has reliably and overwhelmingly voted Republican in recent elections, and is expected to again in 2024.
But Southern Baptists are weighing their options in the GOP presidential primary field — some already lining up behind Donald Trump, others wary of the former president, whom most evangelical voters supported in previous elections despite his vulgar language, serial marriages and sexual bravado. Some are looking at what Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis or other candidates might offer.
But even critics of many Baptist voters’ embrace of hard-right politics have little doubt where this is headed in November 2024 — support for whichever candidate emerges from the GOP nomination process. The only question is the extent of the fervor they bring to the polls.

E Jean Carroll lawyer issues statement on Trump request for fresh trial
Thursday 8 June 2023 19:30 , Oliver O'Connell
Over four weeks ago, a unanimous jury found that Donald Trump sexually assaulted E Jean Carroll in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman and then defamed her by lying about her with hatred, ill-will, or spite. Trump now argues that, even if he did those things, Ms Carroll doesn’t deserve the $5 million in damages that the jury awarded. But Trump’s arguments are frivolous — the jury carefully considered the evidence that Ms Carroll presented, and Trump did not put on a single witness of his own. This time, Trump will not be able to escape the consequences of his actions.
