Liverpool are close to finalising a new deal for a Reds squad star as Jurgen Klopp and Julian Ward look to safeguard their midfield options in the coming years.
The Merseysiders are in the market for new midfielders in 2023 as they look for some fresh legs in their engine room. James Milner is seemingly nearing the end of the line, with the veteran star turning 37 in January. Furthermore, both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both out of contract at the end of the season and due to leave as free agents.
In addition, both Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are the wrong side of 30. And both players have succumbed to injuries at various stages this season.
As such, injuries have left Klopp’s options relatively stretched at various times this season. To that end, it’s little wonder why Jude Bellingham is emerging as their No 1 target. The Reds also have other targets in mind too, most notably an Argentinian star who Klopp has been told is ‘like Zidane’.
One man, though, who always quietly and effectively gets on with his business is Curtis Jones. The 21-year-old Liverpool-born midfielder has risen up through the academy to become a trusted member of Klopp’s first-team squad. While rarely a regular, Jones has never let anyone down when afforded an opportunity.
And still only 21-years-old, Jones has made 81 appearances in all competitions for the Reds since making his debut in 2018/19.
Jones, though, has also been affected by injuries this season, making just seven appearances in all competitions.
However, the club are keen to tie him down to a new deal, despite his arrangement having two and a half years left to run.
Curtis Jones set to sign new Liverpool deal
As such, Football Insider reports that talks with Jones’ representative are advancing an agreement is close.
The player, currently earning a reported £30,000 a week, is due to earn a pay hike on his current arrangement. And the new contract will secure the 21-year-old’s future to Anfield for a further year until 2026.
That contract is the testamony to the faith Klopp has in Jones. He has featured 61 times over the previous two seasons to this one, and Klopp believes Jones can become a major player for the Reds in future years.
This new deal will give him reassurances of his status in Klopp’s plans, while further first-team opportunities will likely come his way.
Indeed, Jones may prove one of the major beneficiaries of the changing face of Liverpool’s midfield in 2023.
And with the player likely to find more opportunities coming his way, Liverpool have quickly moved to secure his future to Anfield.
Jones also has won 12 caps for England U21s, netting three times in the process.
