‘Truth’ emerges on Liverpool pursuit of Bundesliga expert as next sporting director after trusted source reveals interest
There has been an update on Liverpool potentially landing a Bundesliga sporting director to replace Julian Ward after The Athletic leaked their interest in a report on Monday.
Michael Edwards did a fantastic job as sporting director at Liverpool between November 2016 and June last year. The 43-year-old helped Jurgen Klopp to create a brilliant squad by signing top players such as Andy Robertson, Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.
Edwards also did exceptionally well to help Liverpool receive good money for players like Dominic Solanke, Rhian Brewster and Mamadou Sakho.
However, Liverpool found out in November 2021 that Edwards would be stepping down from his position the following summer. As such, his assistant Ward took up the role.
But just a year after Edwards opted to leave Anfield, Ward announced his decision to do the exact same thing. Like Edwards, Ward will see out the remainder of the campaign before taking a break.
According to Sky Sports, the Liverpool board of directors were left disappointed by the decision as they did not see it coming. Klopp, meanwhile, revealed how he was ‘surprised’ by the announcement.

Ward’s impending departure means Liverpool have under six months to find a replacement.
And on Monday, David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed how they are looking at Eintracht Frankfurt’s Markus Krosche. Paul Mitchell of AS Monaco is another candidate.
German source provides ‘truth’ on Liverpool sporting director links
Sport Witness have now given an update on Liverpool’s hunt for Krosche, while citing German outlet Bild. The report claims to provide the ‘truth’.
They state Liverpool are yet to make contact with Frankfurt for Krosche. The chief’s contract runs until summer 2025 and he is apparently ‘very comfortable’ at Frankfurt.
As such, fans of the German side are urged not to panic about a potential Liverpool raid. It seems Krosche will reject the Reds in order to stay where he is.
Krosche would have been a good appointment for Liverpool. He has extensive knowledge of German football, having made over 370 appearances for Paderborn during his playing career. He hung up his boots in 2014 and spent time working at Bayer Leverkusen, Paderborn and RB Leipzig before landing at Frankfurt in 2021.
Having been a director at both Leipzig and Frankfurt, Krosche has experience of working for major clubs and this would have helped him if he decided to take the Liverpool job.
The former midfielder could also have proved influential in getting Jude Bellingham to sign for Liverpool. After all, he will know the Borussia Dortmund staff better than Edwards or Ward.
But Liverpool will probably now have to admit defeat in their chase for Krosche as he seemingly does not wish to work for them. This means Mitchell could become the frontrunner.
Meanwhile, a new Liverpool star could earn his first senior international call-up if he impresses against Real Madrid.
