Thomas Tuchel has called for more Chelsea investment to ensure his side catch up with their Premier League rivals’ impressive transfer business.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea emerged as the main title contenders at the start of last season. However, inconsistency set in at Stamford Bridge and the Blues eventually finished third, 18 points behind the top two.

In fact, Chelsea had to have one or two looks over their shoulders towards the end of the campaign. Tottenham eventually beat Arsenal in the race for fourth, the north London rivals finishing three and five points behind Chelsea respectively.

Ahead of next season, all five clubs have made significant signings as they look to progress.

Tuchel hailed his side’s capture of Raheem Sterling from Man City. Chelsea are also restocking their defence with Kalidou Koulibaly and Nathan Ake.

Still, Tuchel has insisted that Chelsea need to keep going if they are to keep up and improve next term. He referenced the fact that Manchester United are also looking to make the top four again after finishing sixth.

“The stakes are high and we’re competing not only against the best teams who have ever played in the Premier League but also the best coaches,” the German told Sky Sports.

“We’re competing against the two top teams but Tottenham did a very active and aggressive and early transfer period. They have maybe the strongest squad they ever had with one of the best coaches in the world.

“Man Utd are never shy of recruiting with a new coach and Arsenal had some big signings already so we need to keep the level up to be competitive.”

Tuchel wants more Chelsea transfers

“The signing of Raheem shows what we’re capable of doing, it shows the ambition of the club and the ownership and it’s good because we’re all here to win and compete,” Tuchel added.

“We love to compete and we love the challenge at the very top. For that we need signings of new quality players or otherwise there’s no chance.”

Tuchel insisted that another attacking signing is “not a priority” after Sterling, but refused to rule out such an arrival.

Instead, he insisted that getting Chelsea’s defence sorted is a bigger concern after the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Exciting trend sets up new season

The fact that last season’s top five clubs have all signed new goalscorers has set up next season perfectly.

City have added Erling Haaland, with Gabriel Jesus following Sterling out of the Etihad Stadium by moving to Arsenal.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have signed Darwin Nunez for a potential club-record £85million.

And Tottenham have poached Jesus’ fellow Brazil international Richarlison from Everton in a £60million deal.

All five clubs will hope their new attackers can hit the ground running next season.

It is now up to Man Utd to respond, with new manager Erik ten Hag eyeing Ajax star Antony.
