Thomas Tuchel has hinted that Chelsea might not make any more signings this summer, despite having some clear ideas of targets, after responding to Leicester City’s stance on Wesley Fofana.

So far this summer, Chelsea have signed the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella. They have also invested for the future with signings like Omari Hutchinson, Gabriel Slonina, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei.

But despite all that activity, there are still some ways in which Chelsea could strengthen. They have been tipped to add players in attack and defence; Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Everton winger Anthony Gordon and Leicester City defender Fofana all continue to be linked.

Chelsea come up against Leicester on Saturday, but they will not get the chance to see their target in action. Fofana has been training separately from the Foxes’ first-team squad and will not be called up by Brendan Rodgers for the game at Stamford Bridge.

However, Tuchel is not thinking too much about those particular decisions made by his counterpart.

Asked what he reads into the decision to leave Fofana out at a pre-match press conference, Tuchel replied: “It’s your job to read into that.

“It’s not our player. It’s their decision and where it has to stay.”

As for any other potential signings, Tuchel said: “We have some ideas but maybe nobody comes in. It’s not a long window anymore, it closes soon.

“The focus is on the things we can influence. Everybody else is not our decision. No matter what we want, there are always several parties involved that have to agree.”

Tuchel insists Chelsea squad strong enough to get better results

Tuchel will be hoping for a response against Leicester after a 3-0 loss at Leeds last time out. He wants his current crop of players to raise their standards, rather than using it as an excuse for more targets.

The German tactician explained: “Not only in transfers but in approach to how we play, what we play, where we improve. It is not only about shouting for players.

“The squad was strong enough to win the match in Leeds – and far too strong to lose 3-0. This is where everything starts.

“The opinions for transfers have not changed much or at all. We knew for weeks what we have and want to add to the group. I am far too experienced in this job to this level to know not every wish can be fulfilled.

“We have our own stuff to improve and it sharpens our vision on our own team. This is where the focus is.”

The match against Leicester will be Chelsea’s penultimate one before the end of the transfer window. A game against Southampton will follow in late August.

Their first game after the closure of the window will be on September 4, against West Ham. It remains to be seen exactly what their squad will look like by then.
