Paris Saint-Germain are sensing a fresh and this time more realistic opportunity to sign N’Golo Kante from Chelsea, according to a report.

The France international has maintained his status as one of the Premier League’s best players in recent seasons. He initially shot to fame at Leicester, helping them win the title in 2016.

That saw Kante earn a big-money move to Stamford Bridge, where he has added six more pieces of silverware to his trophy cabinet.

Four of those titles have come after the 31-year-old signed a new contract in November 2018 to ward off initial PSG interest.

Although, The Times claims that the French giants believe the next 12 months could present a more realistic chance of signing Kante.

And Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel’s recent comments about his star midfielder have fuelled their belief.

Tuchel admitted that Kante’s injury record will be a major consideration into whether to hand him a new deal. His current terms expire next summer.

As a result, PSG are reportedly ‘monitoring’ his situation and are getting ready to pounce when the time is right.

For now, though, Kante is highly unlikely to leave before Thursday’s transfer deadline. He remains on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

The Times adds that Chelsea’s plan of action is to talk to those players who are urgent contract priorities after the transfer window closes.

Kante, though, only has to wait until January before he is able to talk to overseas clubs about a pre-contract agreement.

He has played 262 games for Chelsea, chipping in with 13 goals and 15 assists. And the 53-cap France star will be hoping his injury record does not hamper his chances of featuring at the World Cup later this year.

Chelsea could fear expensive repeat with Kante

Chelsea have been in this situation before and could face a repeat of this summer’s expensive spending.

Last summer, centre-backs Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen entered the final year of their contracts and uncertainty lingered. In the end, they moved to Spain with Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.

Chelsea recently spent £34million on Kalidou Koulibaly and have paid Leicester £70million for Wesley Fofana to replace the pair.

As it stands, Kante could well be heading down the same path. What’s more, Jorginho – another key Chelsea midfield star – also sees his Blues contract run out next summer.

Meanwhile, Mateo Kovacic – who has been the third player in Chelsea’s long-term first-choice midfield trio – has two years left on his deal.

Chelsea have signed some exciting young midfielders this summer. Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei are emerging talents of the future.

But there is a key problem brewing in the Stamford Bridge midfield in the here-and-now. And the Blues face a busy few months to get it all sorted.
