Tuchel set to complete cheeky Chelsea raid as Bayern Munich enter ‘advanced talks’ for important figure
Bayern Munich are in ‘advanced talks’ to add highly-rated Chelsea coach Anthony Barry to Thomas Tuchel’s backroom staff, according to reports.
The ex-Blues manager worked closely with the 36-year-old during his successful, albeit brief at Stamford Bridge, so it’s no surprise he is eyeing a reunion.
Chelsea don’t want to lose Barry, however, the set-piece specialist is reportedly keen to work with Tuchel again at Bayern.
This is according to reputed transfer journalist Florian Plettenberg, who claims that a switch from London to Germany is becoming increasingly likely for the formidable coach.
On Twitter, he wrote: “News #Barry: He has a very good reputation in England – and is a specialist in set piece training.
“That’s why #CFC was unwilling to lose him. But: Advanced negotiations with #FCBayern now! He wants to follow Tuchel.”
TEAMtalk reported last Friday that Tuchel desperately wanted to bring Barry to the Allianz Arena, but as noted by Plettenberg, it was unclear whether Chelsea would allow him to leave midseason.
However, if these reports are to be believed, the Blues have now given the coach the go-ahead to make the switch to Germany – with a compensation fee likely to be required for his services.
Tuchel is getting the band back together
As mentioned, Tuchel and Barry worked closely together during the manager’s brief spell at Stamford Bridge, guiding the team to three major trophies.
Barry, who played for Wrexham and Accrington Stanley during his playing career, joined Chelsea as a first-team coach in 2020 after working for three years as an assistant to former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook.
The 36-year-old has also worked on the coaching teams for both the Republic of Ireland and Belgium national sides and now works with Portugal on a part-time basis, as well as Chelsea.
Barry initially joined Chelsea as part of Frank Lampard’s backroom staff and remains an integral member of Graham Potter’s team.
Now, Tuchel seems to be reassembling his former backroom team and is joined at Bayern by Zsolt Low – his former assistant at Chelsea – and Arno Michels, who also worked closely with Tuchel during his time at Stamford Bridge.
The German club are currently in the midst of a heated title race, with Tuchel set to face Bundesliga league leaders and his former club Borussia Dortmund in his first game on Saturday, which will prove to be a challenge.
Following that, Bayern will face Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals – a competition which Tuchel won during his short reign at Chelsea.
Ironically, Tuchel and Barry could then potentially face the Blues in the semi-finals, if the coach makes the switch to Germany, as expected.
