Thomas Tuchel was completely surprised by his sacking at Chelsea with the German pleading for more time, according to reports.

The Blues took decisive action on Wednesday morning by announcing Tuchel had been relieved of his duties with the timing coming as a surprise to many.

Chelsea have taken ten points out of a possible 18 in the Premier League so far this season with their two losses coming against Leeds United and Southampton.

Chelsea might be a snake pit for managers but Graham Potter should still jump in

And they didn’t start their new Champions League campaign well on Tuesday night with a shock 1-0 defeat to Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb.

The immediate reaction was to assume Tuchel was fired because of results but Todd Boehly and the Chelsea board have been thinking of a change for a while.

A report yesterday insisted that the German ‘did not enjoy becoming more involved in this summer’s recruitment process’ at Chelsea and Boehly took the view that Tuchel was ‘perhaps better suited to the more detached management style of the past regime’.

It was not a kneejerk decision and The Sun now claim that Tuchel was ‘totally shocked’ by the decision to sack him during a ‘ten-minute meeting’ at the Premier League club’s training ground.

Despite winning the Champions League for the club in 2021, Tuchel lasted just 100 matches at Stamford Bridge with Boehly telling the former Paris Saint-Germain boss he was sacked in ‘swift fashion’.

It is understood that Tuchel was all set to give his players ‘a post-match dressing down’ on Wednesday morning, following their defeat in Croatia, but he was ‘quickly relieved of his duties’ on entry to the training ground.

Tuchel ‘pleaded for more time to turn things around but was given the boot’ by the Chelsea hierarchy with The Sun adding:

‘His request fell on deaf ears as the Stamford Bridge top brass informed the German there was simply no time left.

‘The fan favourite then quickly gathered his belongings before saying goodbye to staff and leaving the complex.’

Brighton boss Graham Potter is being lined up to take over from Tuchel with Chelsea prepared to pay the Seagulls a huge amount of compensation to seal a deal.

After being given permission to speak to Chelsea, Potter travelled down to London yesterday for talks with Boehly and now transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has the latest update.

Chelsea are reportedly hopeful of appointing Potter before they face Fulham at the weekend and Romano wrote on Twitter: “Chelsea have their contract proposal ready to complete the appointment of Graham Potter, today is the day for final decisions.

“It’s up to Potter, now…and it’s not over. Todd Boehly also wants a new director of football to be appointed soon and he’s working on it.”
