The 29-year-old could make his debut for the Tykes against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday.
Tudgay's agents Paramount confirmed the news on their Twitter feed, saying: "Forest's Marcus Tudgay has agreed to join Barnsley on a 28-day loan."
Tudgay moved to Forest from Sheffield Wednesday in November 2010 and scored 13 goals in 64 games.
