Twins' Hughes off DL, will start Friday

Minnesota Twins right-handed pitcher Phil Hughes has been recalled from his rehab assignment at Single-A Ft. Myers and activated from the 10-day disabled list, the team announced Saturday.

Hughes is scheduled to start Sunday at Tampa Bay. He has pitched yet this regular season after straining his left oblique at the end of spring training. He made two rehab starts for Ft. Myers, pitching 10 innings, allowing three earned runs and recording nine strikeouts.

Hughes, 31, has seen each of his past two seasons cut short by surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome. He appeared in just 14 games last season before undergoing surgery after pitching in just 12 games in 2016.

Hughes has not pitched in the majors since July 14, 2017, at Houston and has not started a game since May 21 of last season.

To make room for Hughes on the 25-man roster, the Twins optioned left-hander Gabriel Moya to Triple-A Rochester. Moya made five relief appearances for the Twins this season.
