N’Golo Kante is currently unhappy with the fresh contract terms Chelsea are offering him, according to reports.

The French midfielder joined the Blues from Leicester City in 2016 after starring in the Foxes’ historic title win.

He became the first player to win the Premier League back-to-back with two different teams when Chelsea were crowned champions in his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Kante has struggled with injuries in recent seasons and has only been available for two of his side’s seven games so far this season.

The Blues have struggled in his absence, so much so that head coach Thomas Tuchel lost his job last week.

31-year-old midfielder Kante has entered the final 12 months of his contract.

According to The Athletic, the old regime at Stamford Bridge were prepared to offer him a three-year deal with the option for a fourth.

However, since Todd Boehly and co. took over from Roman Abramovich, discussions have changed ever so slightly.

A two-year deal with the option for a third was ‘verbally’ put on the table, but Kante is not keen.

He is hoping for a longer contract, which is understandable considering the fact this will likely be the last big payday of his career.

It is also understandable that Chelsea would be reluctant to offer the player a long-term contract given his injury problems.

The report adds that Kante will depart as a free agent unless talks over an extension progress.

It is noted that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang accepted the same terms when he joined from Barcelona on deadline day.

However, Kalidou Koulibaly penned a four-year deal when he signed from Serie A club Napoli in July.

Kante is believed to be very happy at Chelsea and would be willing to finish his career in west London.

He is extremely popular in the dressing room, which is a reason the club’s hierarchy are open to renewing his contract.

Having won nearly everything there is to win for both Chelsea and France, the experienced midfielder will not be short of suitors should he be available on a free transfer in 2023.

The former Leicester man has interest from Spain, Germany and France.

There are also two Premier League clubs who would be willing to pounce on the opportunity to sign such a prestigious player.

Unfortunately, none of the teams are revealed in the report, though Kante was linked with a surprise move to Arsenal in the summer.

Having said that, he does not fit the Gunners’ current transfer philosophy.

Speaking last month, Tuchel admitted Chelsea are factoring Kante’s injury problems in contract negotiations.

When asked if the midfielder’s injury record will have a bearing, Tuchel said: “Yes. You have to consider everything that is on the table.

“And on the table is his potential, on the table is his influence, and his quality.

“But on the table of course is his age, his salary and his injury rate, of course.

“From there you build a whole picture and try to find a solution.”
