Two Premier Sports Cup ties to ditch VAR - and why Celtic and Rangers must keep it
Two Premier Sports Cup ties are set to go ahead without the use of VAR this weekend.
It is quarter-final time as we kick off with some Friday night football at Fir Park with Motherwell against Dundee United. That game will go ahead without the officiating technology and with Aberdeen hosting Spartans tomorrow, the same will apply for that one, reports the Daily Mail. The four clubs will reportedly save on £16,000 as a result.
That's because neither has been chosen for TV and instead are only on the Premier Sports Player, so there is no obligation to use VAR. However, with Rangers hosting Dundee tomorrow and Celtic taking on Falkirk on Sunday, both are on Premier Sports' main channel and so must use it.

It could throw up controversy with a discrepancy in how the four games will be officiated. VAR has proved massively divisive since it's introduction to Scottish football in October 2022 and this could be another occasion on which it's use, or lack of, provokes plenty of debate.
