Fernando Alonso has identified the two tracks where he thinks Aston Martin have the best chance of beating Red Bull.

While Aston Martin are enjoying one of the biggest upturns in form in recent F1 memory, they are still some way off winning a race with Red Bull proving unstoppable so far.

Following the Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull have not only won every race but secured a one-two finish in all but one of them.

Alonso is definitely the best of the rest having stood on the podium four times but he is still on a mission to secure his 33rd Formula 1 win, a decade after his last one in Barcelona.

And it is at the Spanish track that Alonso believes Aston Martin have the best chance of dethroning Red Bull.

“I think at the beginning of the year a podium was amazing. Now after four podiums we want obviously more, and at least a second place,” Alonso said after the Miami Grand Prix.

“But the two Red Bulls are always unbreakable, and they are always super fast. But maybe Monaco, maybe Barcelona we have a possibility.”

While Alonso is hoping for another win to add to his collection, he later admitted in the same press conference that beating Ferrari and Mercedes to P2 in the Constructors’ Championship was a more realistic goal.

“I think the year is going to be difficult. The gap is quite big even though I think today has been our best race pace yet in the season,” he said.

“We finish, I think, closest to the leaders, no safety cars, nothing in the race and we’re still quite fast. So let’s see. I think the season is going to be long. Hopefully some of the tracks we will be a little bit closer to them. And some of the upgrades that we will bring later in the season maybe put us in a different or more competitive position.

“But I think our main focus, to be honest, is just looking behind and trying to keep Mercedes and Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship under control. But I think Red Bull, we have to accept they are doing a better job than everyone else and we need to do a better job.

“I think in Imola it’s going to be an interesting fight again. As you said, a lot of teams will bring upgrades to the car. Mercedes, probably Ferrari as well and we will try to keep finishing in front of them on Sunday.”
