Tymal Mills: England bowler to undergo scan on thigh injury suffered in Sri Lanka win at T20 World Cup

Tymal Mills: England bowler to undergo scan on thigh injury suffered in Sri Lanka win at T20 World Cup

England fast bowler Tymal Mills will go for a scan on his right quadriceps in the “next 48 hours” after he limped off nine balls into his spell in the T20 World Cup win over Sri Lanka.

While the injury looked bleak on Monday, with Mills immediately withdrawing himself from the action, England appeared more optimistic about it on Tuesday morning.

England have fielded an unchanged team for the first four matches of the tournament, all of which have been won. While they have not mathematically qualified for next week’s semi-finals, they are all-but assured of a spot in the last four.

Their final Super 12 match is against South Africa on Saturday. South Africa face Bangladesh on Tuesday in a bid to keep their realistic hopes of qualification alive in a fierce race to join England in the knockouts.

Australia and West Indies – who also meet on Saturday – are in contention, too.

That England now have a maximum of three games remaining across 12 days in the tournament raises Mills’ hope of further involvement.

If he is ruled out, Reece Topley is the travelling reserve seamer, although England might be tempted to add Liam Dawson – an extra spinner – to the 15-man group.

The fitness of two other seamers, Mark Wood and Tom Curran, will have a say, too. Curran is available again after a knee injury, but Wood must prove his availability to play following an ankle injury.

With the Ashes only five weeks away, England will not take unnecessary risks with Wood’s fitness.
