England’s Tymal Mills has been ruled out of the remainder of the T20 World Cup with a right thigh strain, with Surrey’s Reece Topley added to the squad.

Mills suffered the injury nine balls into his spell in England’s fourth match of the tournament, Monday’s win over Sri Lanka.

Mills left the field immediately and went for a scan on Tuesday evening, which revealed the extent of the injury.

England are already missing seamers Jofra Archer, Sam Curran and Ben Stokes to injury, while squad members Mark Wood and Tom Curran have spent time on the sidelines during the tournament.

Both men are set to return to full training on Thursday. Wood would be favourite to come into the side for Saturday’s meeting with South Africa, although David Willey is also available. Mills’ absence leaves England light at the death.

England are effectively through to the knockouts after four wins, but their qualification has not yet been officially confirmed due to net run rate. They are set to be involved in a semi-final next week.

Mills’ injury is a blow for England, who have been unchanged until this point. He has seven wickets, as many as any member of the squad, and was superb in the wins over West Indies and Bangladesh.

It is a bitter blow for a player who returned to international cricket for the first time in three years and has suffered a horror run of injuries, especially to his back.

Topley, another left-arm seamer, was added to the group of travelling reserves when Sam Curran was ruled out injured, with Tom Curran promoted. Topley now finds himself in the full squad, having signed for the Melbourne Renegades on Wednesday morning.

England could have added an extra spinner, Liam Dawson, to their squad, but have chosen to retain the same balance.
