Tyrann Mathieu says Chiefs have 'one of the most toxic fan bases in all of sports'

Kansas City Chiefs fans expect a lot from their team these days. After winning the Super Bowl in 2019 and reaching the big game again in 2020, Chiefs fans demand excellence from their team.

With the Chiefs just 3-4 to open the season, things are getting ugly. After one fan page called the team out on Instagram, Chiefs players Anthony Hitchens and Tyrann Mathieu hopped in the comments to defend the organization.

The Instagram post asked fans to rate three moves the team made "in terms of how bad they were." Hitchens' signing was one of the options.

Upon seeing that, Hitchens responded. He listed off the team's accomplishments in recent seasons and used those to say "fans will never be satisfied." Mathieu also hopped in the comments, calling Chiefs fans "one of the most toxic fan bases in all of sports."

Both players reportedly made additional comments on that post, but those may have been deleted.

Mathieu apologized for his "mistake" a few hours later.

"I haven't had the season I've wanted to have, and as a team I think you could say the same," Mathieu said, via ESPN. "Frustration tends to build up. Obviously people that really know me — teammates, people I deal with in the community, even fans that I come across in the gas station — I think these people can see me being a genuine person.

"Obviously, I shouldn't have used those choices of words. I'm looking forward to playing better and doing better and most importantly not being a distraction to my teammates."

Chiefs looking to bounce back after slow start

The team's slow start is troubling, but the Chiefs' losses have come against tough opponents. Kansas City lost to the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers and Tennessee Titans. Those teams have combined to go 18-8 to open the season.

Things aren't going to get much better going forward. After playing the 2-5 New York Giants in Week 8, the Chiefs will take on the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers and Las Vegas Raiders before Kansas City's bye in Week 12. Those three teams have combined for a 17-4 record this season.
