Tyrell Malacia has sent out a warning to his Manchester United teammates battling for the left-back spot at Old Trafford, claiming he intends to make it his own.

The 22-year-old defender became Erik ten Hag’s first signing for United when he arrived from Feyenoord this summer, and he will battle Luke Shaw, Alex Telles and Brandon Williams for a place in the team.

England man Shaw was handed the start in the 4-0 friendly win over Liverpool in Bangkok. However, Malacia replaced him at half-time of the rout over United’s Premier League rivals.

And the Netherlands international insists he will do everything in his power to show Ten Hag he should be starting.

Asked whether he can challenge the more established Shaw, Malacia said: “Of course, always. There are some good left-backs here: Telles, Brandon (Williams), Luke, me. So you have to work hard and prove ourselves in training and in the end the coach will make a decision.

“Of course, it’s everybody’s aim (to be in the starting XI). You always want to play, so you have to work hard for it. I like to attack, I think that’s one of the reasons why [Ten Hag] brought me here, so I have to prove to everyone why I’m here.

“He wants to attack with the left-back and right-back, so that’s what he wants. He has a system and he wants me to play like this, and that’s something we speak about.”

Malacia also revealed what it was like to pull on a United shirt for the first time against Liverpool.

He added: “I’m happy that I made my debut and that we got the win. I already feel like I’m home. They made me feel like I’m home already, so I’m happy to be here.

“You always want to win games, especially against Liverpool. But in the end, these games are to get fit, so it’s another plus. We didn’t speak much (after the game), we head to Australia we will sit down and analyse it.

“It’s a big difference (from the Eredivisie). I wanted this all my life, I worked hard for it, so I have to work harder now.”

Shaw the more logical starter

If fit, it’s more likely that Ten Hag turns to Luke Shaw for the start of the new campaign in early August.

While the Dutchman becomes accustomed to Premier League football, starting more players used to playing in England just makes more sense.

Shaw has made over 200 top-flight appearances, despite still only being 27. And when fully fit he has shown how much of an asset he is to United.

To have a player like Malacia breathing down his neck will create a new dynamic for Shaw though.

The Dutchman does appear more dynamic option and it may be that he gets the nod in home games when the emphasis is more on United to attack.

But the left-back situation will certainly be one to watch at Old Trafford this season.
