Liverpool’s Conor Coady headed home from a corner minutes before half-time and Middlesbrough forward Luke Williams doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half.

But Ali Faez’s penalty a quarter of an hour from time led to a tense finish, one which culminated in joy for Iraq and agony for England when Ali Adnan fired home deep into time added on amidst a desperate goalmouth scramble.

Elsewhere in Group E action, Chile held on despite a late red card to defeat Egypt 2-1 shortly before the England-Iraq kick-off at the same stadium.

Despite dominating early on, Chile fell to a 10th-minute counter with Mahmoud Kahraba giving the North African’s the lead from a Hassan Ahmed through ball.

Nicolas Castillo’s deflected strike made it 1-1 on 25 minutes and with 14 left in the game, substitute Christian Bravo smashed home a beautiful winner.

Four minutes after taking the lead, Chile went a man down due to Cristian Cuevas’ dangerous lunge on Saleh Gomaa but wasteful finishing from Egypt saw them unable to snatch a point at the death, unlike Iraq.

In Group F, Marko Livaja scored the only goal as Croatia beat Uruguay at Ataturk despite missing a penalty.

And Uzbekistan hammered New Zealand 3-0 with goals coming from Abbosbek Makhstaliev, Igor Sergeev and Diyorjon Turapov.
