Uefa Nations League – League A

Group 1

A goalless draw on the opening day of the tournament may not have been the result the suits in Nyon had wanted, but the point earned by France in Munich provided the world champions the foundation to build upon. Goals from Kylian Mbappé and Olivier Giroud in their second game, the 2-1 defeat of Holland, leaves Didier Deschamps' side top ahead of their return leg against Germany in Paris next month.

Group 2

Following two resounding thumpings – 6-0 away to Switzerland and the 3-0 defeat to Belgium in Reykjavik – Euro 2016 semi-finalists Iceland appear doomed as they sit at the foot of the table having shipped nine goals. The Swiss head to Brussels next month, though Vladimir Petkovic will be buoyed knowing he hosts Roberto Martínez's side in Lucerne in the final, potentially decisive, group game.

Group 3

Cristiano Ronaldo may have been too busy sunning himself in St Tropez for Portugal's opener, but Fernando Santos's side still edged their way past Italy thanks to a goal from Andre Silva. The result leaves the Portuguese top, while Italy remain rooted to the bottom having dropped two points in their curtain-raiser with Poland in Bologna.

Group 4

Two games played, two wins and eight goals scored. Spain, under new manager Luis Enrique, appear back to their best following their disappointing summer in Russia. Win or draw their next game at home with England next month and Spain will secure their place in the Uefa Nations League finals. Croatia, meanwhile, appear doomed following Tuesday night's 6-0 thrashing by Spain.

Uefa Nations League – League B

Both Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina will be confident of earning promotion to League A after winning both of their opening group games. No country at the bottom of any of the four three-team groups has yet played twice, though the omens do not look good for Republic of Ireland who got their campaign off to the worst possible start when they were soundly beaten by Wales. Back-to-back home games with Denmark and Wales next month will give Martin O'Neill's side the chance to turn things around and avoid the ignominy of relegation.

Uefa Nations League – League C

Having beaten Albania 2-0 in their opening match, Scotland will be confident of earning promotion to League C, though must first travel to Israel next month ahead of a potentially tricky trip to Albania. Elsewhere in the league, just Finland and Bulgaria have won their opening two games, though with Group 2, 3 and 4 having four countries – as opposed to the three in Scotland's group – still have another four games to play.

Uefa Nations League – League D

Georgia, Luxembourg and Macedonia all lead their groups having won both of their games, while Gibraltar and San Marino, unsurprisingly, both sit at the foot of their respective group tables along with Kazakhstan and Malta. Despite their dismal starts to the new tournament, they may take succour in the fact that they cannot sink any further. Quite literally, there is no relegation from League D.
