UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor lived up to expectations. Actually, it exceeded them.

UFC president Dana White had anticipated a $7.1 million gate for UFC 189 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. When he announced that actual numbers at the post-fight press conference, however, the gate totaled $7.2 million, produced by an audience of 16,019.

The $7.2 million gate was the highest mixed martial arts total ever in the United States for a single event. It surpassed Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II at UFC 148 in July of 2012.

White couldn't, or wouldn't confirm pay-per-view numbers, but said “it's looking good” for UFC 189 to eclipse 1 million buys.

The main ended up being for the interim UFC featherweight championship after champion Jose Aldo had to drop out of the fight due to a rib injury.

Conor McGregor remained in the headliner and faced Chad Mendes instead, but may have silenced some of the doubters, finishing him via TKO stoppage in the waning seconds of round two.

When McGregor and Aldo finally face each other, White side the plan is for them to meet in Las Vegas.
