UFC 193 Lands at Stadium, Adds Michael Bisping vs. Robert Whittaker to Line-up

With the UFC finally settling on Ethiad Stadium for the promotion's debut event in Melbourne, Australia, the bout announcements are coming fast and furious. The latest UFC 193 addition is a middleweight bout pitting Englishman Michael Bisping against New Zealander Robert Whittaker.

UFC officials on Wednesday finally confirmed that UFC 193 would be held in the massive stadium with a welterweight title fight between champion Robbie Lawler and challenger Carlos Condit topping the bill, along with a featured heavyweight bout pitting Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in a rematch of his bloodbath with Mark Hunt.

The Bisping vs. Whittaker bout was first reported by ESPN.

A perennial contender, Bisping (27-7) has yet to earn a shot at the belt, but hopes adding Whittaker to his recent hit list will keep him moving in the right direction. Bisping stumbled against Luke Rockhold late last year, but has since won back-to-back bouts over C.B. Dollaway and Thales Leites, giving the 36-year-old fighter hope that his dream of winning a UFC championship can still be a reality.

Whittaker (14-4) won the welterweight tournament on The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes reality series, but struggled to gain his footing at 170 pounds in the Octagon. He is currently in the midst of a three-fight winning streak, however, with his two most recent fights being at middleweight.

Ethiad Stadium has hosted crowds nearing 57,000 for rugby and more than 70,000 for the 2014 International Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which means UFC 193 could be headed for record territory. The largest UFC audience to date was 55,724 at Rogers Centre in Toronto when Georges St-Pierre fought Jake Shields in the UFC 129 main event.
