UFC 199 Results: Brian Ortega Remains Unbeaten, TKOs Clay Guida

Brian Ortega kept his undefeated record intact on Saturday when he faced former Strikeforce lightweight champion and UFC veteran Clay Guida at UFC 199 in Los Angeles.

In classic Guida style, Guida started fast and kept a furious pace during the preliminary card headlining bout. Ortega had difficulty dealing with Guida's constant movement in the opening frame and was briefly knocked down by a straight right hand.

In the second round, Ortega began to find his timing and range. He was persistent with his jab and began landing uppercuts and left hands while Guida continued to move forward. After two rounds, it appeared that Ortega was down on the scorecards.

Ortega picked up the pace in the final frame. He pressured Guida and began working combinations. With 20 seconds remaining on the fight clock, Ortega landed a knee as Guida changed levels for a takedown. Guida crashed to the canvas and referee Herb Dean stopped the fight. Guida briefly wrestled with Dean before realizing the fight had been stopped.

“Sometimes it takes me a little bit longer to kick in my gears. In the third round I was trying to push it, push it more. During the first two rounds, I didn't want to get caught. When you get eager, you get sloppy, and when you get sloppy, you get knocked out,” said the 25-year-old following the TKO win.

“Thats's something we do with a lot of my coaches,” he said about the knee that ended the fight. “It's something that we always do, and I'm surprised that I got that knee. I thought he was going to shoot in, but he didn't, so we banged it out.”

Ortega was ranked twelfth in the featherweight division heading into the fight. He'll likely move up slightly in the rankings. For Guida, the loss was his second-in-a-row. It was the first time that “The Carpenter” has lost consecutive fights in 2012.
