UFC 205 Weigh-ins: McGregor vs. Alvarez Set, But a Main Card Fight Canceled
Saturday's UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor fight card has hit some bumps along the way, and the rough ride didn't stop at Friday's early weigh-ins.
The Madison Square Garden card features three title fights. The champions and all of their opponents made weight. Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor will meet in the main event in a champion vs. champion battle for Alvarez's lightweight belt. Tyron Woodley will put his welterweight title on the line against Stephen Thompson. And strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will defend against Karolina Kowakiewicz.
That's the good news.
The bad news is that the fight between Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Kelvin Gastelum was canceled.
“I will not be fighting @Cowboycerrone 2morrow on account that I couldn't make the wght limit. I apologize 2 cowboy ure a legend. God bless,” Tweeted Gastelum, who didn't step on the scale.
Cerrone was originally supposed to fight former champion Robbie Lawler on the card, but he withdrew early on after the fight was announced. Now, Cerrone is left with no one to fight.
Thiago Alves also missed the mark for his lightweight debut, stepping on the scale at 162.6 pounds, well above the 156-pound limit. His opponent, Jim Miller, had to put on weight so that the fight could continue.
Although he agreed to fight Alves, the New York State Athletic Commission required that Miller be within five pounds of Alves' weight. So Miller stepped on the scale at 157.6 pounds, which is technically above the 156-pound limit for lightweight, but not a penalty because of the negotiation to keep the fight intact.
Alves was fined 20-percent of his show money, which will go to Miller, and the fight will continue.
