UFC Fight Night 62's Jorge Oliveira Suspended for Steroids

Jorge de Oliveira was suspended for one year by the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission after testing postive in March for the anabolic steroid stanozolol. (MMA Weekly)

The Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) earlier this week announced that all 24 fighters from UFC Fight Night 62: Maia vs. LaFlare on March 21 in Rio de Janeiro were drug tested and all of them produced clean results. CABMMA on Thursday reversed course, issuing a statement that one fighter tested positive for steroids.

Jorge de Oliveira tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. The reason for the initial misinformation was credited to a communication error.

“A communication error was identified by the Executive Committee when issuing the drug test results from UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. LaFlare held on March 21st of 2015,” read the commission’s statement to MMAWeekly.com. “Due to a misinterpretation of the partial report sent by the UCLA Olympic Analytical Lab (WADA Accredited Lab), where tests were analyzed and results confirmed.

“Therefore, the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) hereby states that the athlete Jorge Antonio Cezario de Oliveira tested positive for anabolic steroid stanozolol. This last sample code and its result were sent a day a part from the initial report, which in this case, was the reason of not being mentioned in the Commission's initial statement.”

Oliveira lost his fight with Christos Giagos, so the result won’t be affected. The athletic commission suspended Oliveira until March 21, 2016. There was no mention of a fine.
