UFC Fight Night 67 Results: Carlos Condit is Back, Finishes Thiago Alves by TKO

It had been fourteen months since fourth-ranked welterweight Carlos Condit had fought when he stepped inside the octagon at UFC Fight Night 67 in Goiânia, Brazil on Saturday, but you wouldn’t have known it by his performance.

“The Natural Born Killer” took out twelfth-ranked Thiago Alves by technical knockout due to doctor stoppage at the conclusion of the second round.

The opening round was a feeling out process. Condit used his reach advantage well to keep Alves on the outside while Alves looked to counter with power shots.

Condit adjusted his attack between rounds and stunned Alves with an elbow on the inside that sent the Brazilian crashing to the canvas with a shattered nose. Condit followed Alves to the mat and briefly had the American Top Team-trained fighter mounted. He hammered away with punches, but Alves worked his way back to his feet.

Alves fired back looking to land that game changing shot, but it didn’t come. Following the dominant round by Condit, the doctor stopped the fight due to Alves’ broken nose.

“I have nothing but respect for Thiago Alves. He’s a guy that I’ve looked up to in the sport for years, and it was an honor to fight him,” said Condit following the win.

“After the feeling out process, I just started thinking about different things that we had worked on. We had put together a lot of different tools, different tactics, and the first thing that I threw that we worked on really, really worked,” said the 31-year-old.

Alves would have liked to been able to continue, but understands why the fight was stopped.

“I felt that I could keep fighting at least for another round, but congratulations to Condit. He did a really good job. The doctor stopped the fight and I have to respect it,” said Alves.

During his time on the sidelines due to a knee injury, Condit had largely become the forgotten contender. With the finish of Alves, he reminded everyone in the division that he hadn’t gone anywhere.

Looking ahead, Condit wants an exciting match-up, but doesn’t care who he faces next.

“I want a good fight. I want somebody exciting. I want somebody that the fans are excited to watch me fight. Those are the kind of fights that I want to be in, so whoever. Whatever. Let’s do it,” he said.
