UFC Fight Night 71 Results: Manny Gamburyan Can't Find the Finish, but Secures Victory
Manny Gamburyan and Scott Jorgensen are two longtime veterans of the fight game. Each has fought for, but failed to achieve, a major championship. And each made the transition from the WEC to the UFC.
While both were consistently in title contention in the WEC, neither has found much consistency in the UFC.
Gamburyan entered their fight at UFC Fight Night 71 on Wednesday night coming off of a victory over Cody Gibson, which had followed a loss to Nik Lentz. Jorgenson lost to Wilson Reis prior to stepping in the cage in San Diego.
Needless to say, both men had a lot to fight for, and the way they fought for it is the very reason that both men are still competing in the Octagon.
Gamburyan was swinging for the fences from the opening bell, and when Jorgensen shot a double-leg takedown on him, Gamburyan turned it to his favor and locked up a tight guillotine choke.
Somehow, Jorgensen remained calm and scrambled, eventually escaping the choke. But that was only opening minute of the fight.
Gamburyan then took Jorgensen down, ground and pounding him briefly before Jorgensen brought the fight back to standing, where the two traded shots.
Gamburyan went for another takedown, scooped Jorgensen up and slammed him to the canvas, but Jorgensen scrambled and escaped and then immediately rocked Gamburyan with a flurry. The Armenian quickly returned fire and dropped Jorgensen, but couldn't finish the fight despite an intense flurry of ground and pound.

Round two didn’t offer as many near finishes as the opening frame, but the action was still furious as each tried to take the other's head off. Gamburyan started to separate himself a little bit more in the second stanza, securing more takedowns and landing telling blows, including a couple of hard elbows on the mat and a brutal knee to the body in the waning seconds.
Neither fighter took his foot off the gas pedal in round three, as both came out swinging, but Gamburyan again remained more aggressive, and seemed to be the fresher fighter in the final frame.
He continued to shoot takedowns and pressure Jorgensen up against the fence, eating several hard punches and knees for his efforts, but still outgunned his foe in most of the exchanges.
Jorgensen was searching for a knockout or submission to try and salvage the fight up until the final seconds escaped him, but it was Gamburyan that had dominated the better part of the fight. Jorgensen, shaking his head after the horn sounded, knew what the outcome would be.
The judges scored the fight 30-27 across the board in Gamburyan’s favor.
It may have been Gamburyan’s night, but it wasn’t for a lack of fight on Jorgensen’s part. It proved entertaining from the opening bell and showed once again why these two have remained under the Zuffa banner regardless of win-loss records.
