UFC Fight Night 87: Overeem vs. Arlovski Gate and Attendance from Rotterdam

Third-ranked heavyweight Alistair Overeem likely earned himself a shot at the UFC belt on Sunday when he finished former champion Andrei Arlvoski in the second round of the Fight Night Rotterdam main event.

Arlovski pressured Overeem in the opening round. He rushed in with a flurry to start the fight. Overeem covered and blocked most of the onslaught, but absorbed a couple shots as well.

Afterward, Overeem stayed on the outside and picked his shots. Midway through the round, he secured a trip takedown and put Arlovski on his back. He dropped down into Arlovski’s guard and softened up the Belarusian with punches.

In the second frame, Overeem took the fight to Arlovski. He landed a right hand, and Arlovski fired back. One minute into the second round, Overeem landed a crane kick straight out of The Karate Kid movie. He followed up with a left hand that dropped “The Pit Bull.” Overeem followed Arlvoski to the canvas and put him away with a series of right hands. The end came at the 1:12 mark of the second frame.

Over dislocated his toe when the crane kick landed. Following the fight, the toe was popped back in place by the medical staff inside the octagon.

“My toe was on a 45-degree angle. I was like, no, I didn't break my toe. Luckily, the medic here, he just pulled it straight and then it was good,” he said.

After the TKO victory, Overeem called for a title shot against the winner of champion Fabricio Werdum and challenger Stipe Miocic who headline UFC 198 on May 14 in Brazil.

“We're going to get that belt in November, November 12 at Madison Square Garden,” Overeem said. “Werdum, Stipe, may the best man win, but I'm going to take on the winner. I'm going to beat the winner, and next year, 2017, I'm going to be defending the belt in Amsterdam Arena.”

Overeem is riding a four-fight winning streak and is currently ranked third in the heavyweight division. For Arlovski, he's now on a two-fight skid and will like drop from the fifth spot in the rankings.
