UFC on Fox 9 Results: Joe Lauzon Batters and Bloodies Mac Danzig En Route to Victory

Joe Lauzon and Mac Danzig are two fighters known for taking risks in their fights, constantly going for the finish. That’s exactly how things started off at UFC on Fox 9 on Saturday night at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif., when the two met in the Octagon.

Lauzon quickly edged ahead by storming Danzig with punches and then clinching and taking him to the mat. He then moved to full mount and transitioned to an armbar. That armbar would have stopped many other fighters, but Danzig wormed his way out.

Danzig started strong at the beginning of round two, employing his jab and doing a good job integrating knee strikes and kicks. Lauzon, however, waited until the right moment, tripped Danzig to the ground and did his most significant damage to that point in the fight. He dropped two heavy elbows across Danzig’s face; busting him open across the bridge of his nose, blood streaming into The Ultimate Fighter Season 6 winner’s eyes.

Lauzon passed to side control and then to full mount as the round wound down. He slipped off for another armbar attempt at the 10-second mark, but couldn’t lock it out, sending the fight into the third frame.

Danzig again started strong, driving some solid punches to the body, but Lauzon again tripped him to the mat. This time, however, he trapped one of Danzig’s arms, unloading with a vicious assault of elbows and punches. Lauzon then moved to full mount and dropped more elbows.

Lauzon slipped up, going for an armbar without fully setting it up first, and Danzig escaped. Seconds later, however, Lauzon bulled Danzig onto his back once again, quickly passed to side control, and dropped a few more shots to Danzig’s crimson face.

Both men came into this fight needing a victory, each with back-to-back losses in their previous two fights. It would be Lauzon that took control for most of the fight and did the greater amount of damage, walking out of the Octagon with his tenth UFC victory – via unanimous decision – and getting back on the winning track.

For Danzig, it might have marked his final chance at redemption. This was his third consecutive loss, setting his UFC record to 5-8.
