UFC Heavyweight Champ Fabricio Werdum's First Defense? Cain Velasquez

While initially targeting either Stipe Miocic or Andrei Arlovski for UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum‘s first title defense, UFC officials have instead opted for an immediate rematch.

UFC president Dana White informed UFC Tonight that Werdum would put his belt on the line against the man he took it from, Cain Velasquez. A date and location for the fight have yet to be determined.

Werdum (20-5-1) first won a share of the heavyweight championship by defeating Mark Hunt for the interim version of the belt at UFC 180 in the promotion's Mexico City debut. That bout occurred when Velasquez had to pull out of his originally scheduled title defense against Werdum due to a knee injury.

Velasquez (13-2) was finally ready to return to the Octagon for the first time in more than a year and a half when he and Werdum met at UFC 188 in June, the promotion's return to the Mexican capital. Werdum needed just 12 minutes and 13 seconds to submit Velasquez via guillotine choke to unify the belts.

Velasquez had won four consecutive bouts prior to losing to Werdum. His only other career loss was a knockout at the hands of Junior dos Santos in 2011.

Instead of a title shot, Arlovski (24-10, 1 NC), who holds a victory over Werdum at UFC 70, will meet fellow former champion Frank Mir in the co-main event of UFC 191 on Sept. 5. Ranked as the No. 4 UFC heavyweight, he is currently on a five-fight winning streak.

Miocic (13-2) is currently ranked No. 3 and is coming off of a victory over Mark Hunt in his must recent bout, but just prior to the Hunt fight, he lost a unanimous decision the dos Santos. Miocic is currently targeted for a bout with Ben Rothwell at UFC Fight Night 76 in Dublin.
