The number of people who have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus has risen by 16.

Public Health England (PHE) said 41,465 people had died in the UK within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,200 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

PHE also said that as of 9am on Wednesday, there had been a further 1,048 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus. Overall, 328,846 cases have been confirmed.

It comes after NHS England said a further nine people have died in hospitals in England in the last 24 hours.

Five deaths were recorded in the north west, along with one in the East of England, one in London, one in the Midlands, and one in the north east and Yorkshire.

Meanwhile, Scotland recorded two new deaths, bringing an end to a six-week run of no Covid-19 fatalities.

They are the first newly registered deaths of people who tested positive in the previous 28 days since July 16, the First Minister said.

It brings the total death toll to 2,494.

Speaking at First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood, Nicola Sturgeon said: "I think all of us have become used to hearing news of no deaths under these daily figures.

"These two new deaths today are, of course, devastating for those who will be grieving the loss but they should also be a reminder to us that the threat of Covid hasn’t yet gone away."

She said 67 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 19,988.

The First Minister added of those who tested positive, 249 were in hospital, up six in 24 hours.

In Wales, another person has died having tested positive for coronavirus, bringing its total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,594.

Public Health Wales said the number of cases of Covid-19 in Wales increased by 34, bringing the revised confirmed total to 17,808.

No new deaths were recorded in Northern Ireland, but another 72 cases have been confirmed.

A total of 384 have tested positive over the last seven days, health officials said.

The Department of Health will release the official daily figure later today, which includes deaths in all settings.
