Surge testing is underway in Bolton after cases of the Indian Covid variant was found there.

The strain been declared a “variant of concern” by Public Health England after cases more than double in a week.

Testing is currently underway in areas within the BL3 postcode.

Meanwhile, five-star holiday prices have been slashed in half as Britons scramble to book overseas holidays.

Brits will be allowed to travel abroad for the first time since January from May 17, and many are booking flights and hotels to destinations approved by the government’s travel traffic light system.

The increased interest has seen prices slashed on luxury getaways, with an analysis by TravelSupermarket.com finding that many five-star hotels were available in late May and June for half the normal price.

Thomas Cook said that bookings for holidays in Portugal had risen by 250 per cent compared with a week earlier.
