Brits are set for a weekend of showers and "blustery weather" – but sunny spells could see temperatures rise to 22C in some areas.

The north and west of England are the most likely to see wet weather, although forecasters have said more of the UK is likely to see some downpours.

There could also be fairly high winds on Saturday, especially in the north of England and Scotland, Met Office warned.

But in the south-east of the UK the showers should be interspersed with some sunny spells throughout the weekend, which could see the mercury hit 21C or 22C on Saturday.

Sunday is likely to be rainy too, with most showers concentrated in the north of the UK again, the Met Office added.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill told the Standard: "Tomorrow is going to be a showery day for many places, it will be blustery particularly towards the north.

"Most of the showers will be coming in from the north-west, so the north is where much of the wet weather will be.

"The further south and east you are the greatest chance you have of staying dry but most places are likely to see some showers at some times. But there will be sunny spells in between.

"In the brisk winds particularly towards the north it will feel quite cool but we are looking at highs of 21C, possibly 22C somewhere towards the south-east tomorrow. In the sunshine in that area it will feel quite warm.

"On Sunday many parts of England and Wales are going to have outbreaks of showery rain, perhaps towards the south east you are more likely to stay dry but even still some showers are possible.

"For Scotland and Northern Ireland there may be some showers but for much of the day it's looking largely fine, with lighter winds than on Saturday too."

The mixed weather is set to continue into next week, with showers coming in from the west of the UK on Monday and expected to spread across the north of the country on Tuesday, the Met Office said.
