Parts of the UK are set to bask in temperatures of more than 30C this week as a heatwave sweeps across the country.

According to the Met Office, the south-east of England is likely to be hottest as warmer weather pushes north from the Mediterranean.

But forecasters say most of the country will feel the effects of the heat in the next few days.

Some rain is expected in Scotland, however, with the north-west of the country braced for downpours early on Monday.

Bonnie Diamond, A Met Office meteorologist, told Yahoo News UK: “We will see plenty of sunshine for many parts of the UK this week with south-eastern England seeing the highest temperatures.

“Today areas in central-southern England will likely experience temperatures above 25C, with the south-east peaking at around 29C to 30C.

“Tomorrow is likely to be even hotter, with a possible highest temperature of 31C expected in the south-east.

“From Wednesday onwards a cold front will bring temperatures closer to normal for most parts of the UK.

Scotland and Northern Ireland are enjoying warmer than average temperatures in the high teens and early twenties.

“For those regions today and tomorrow will bring sunny spells which will turn cloudier into Wednesday when temperatures will return to normal.

“The average September temperature for UK is about 17C so this week’s temperatures are obviously much higher and it is unusually warm. The last time we had similar a September heatwave was in 2016 when a temperature of 34.4C was recorded at Gravesend.”

Wednesday could be equally hot for northern parts of England, with highs of around 28 expected in some areas.

Towards the end of this week temperatures will return to levels expected in September and will fall into the low 20s in most parts of the region.

The September heat follows on from an August heatwave which saw temperatures top out at 34C for six days running last month.

The coming heat will still be some way off the highest September temperature ever recorded, which was 35.6C on 2 September 1906.
