Unai Emery explains decision to recall exciting Aston Villa loanee, with big impact expected
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has spoken about his decision to recall Bertrand Traore from his loan at Istanbul Basaksheir.
The Villans were in the market for a new winger in the January window, but ultimately failed to get a deal over the line, hence Emery’s decision to bring him back.
The 27-year-old will not be available for Villa’s match against Leicester on Saturday due to an injury but will be fully fit in the near future.
Traore has shown flashes of brilliance playing for the Midlands club in the past, but Steven Gerrard opted to send him out on loan after he fell behind the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Leon Bailey in the pecking order.
Overall, in 47 appearances for Villa, the Burkina Faso international has scored eight goals and made nine assists. On loan at Basaksheir, he has netted three times in 18 appearances this season.
Emery has now opened up on the decision to cut Traore’s loan spell short.
In a recent press conference, he said: “We were following some players and analysing if they are better than the players we have or better than the possibility to have Bertrand Traoré back again.
“We decided that if we don’t have a possibility to sign a player who can improve our squad, improve our wingers, then we were sure – don’t do it.
“At the end [of the transfer window], I am so happy because I think we have players with big commitment and showing us good performances.”
Emery gives Traore second chance at Aston Villa
Whilst Traore, as mentioned, has shown flashes of his talent at Villa, consistency has always been his problem.
He is quick and unbelievably skilful, with the confidence to take defenders on, but he also gives the ball away too easily at times.
Emery was keen to add a new winger to his squad last month, after being linked with moves for the likes of Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze and former Everton man Gerard Deulofeu.
This is partly due to the fact that Emery has been left unconvinced by the recent performances of Ramsey and Bailey.
Between them, the pair have scored just six goals this season. With that in mind, Emery will be hoping Traore can find his shooting boots for the second half of the campaign.
The Villans currently find themselves in 11th place, but are only three points adrift from sixth-placed Brighton. If they could bridge that gap it would represent a very successful first season in charge for the Spanish coach.
It will be interesting to see how Traore performs when gets his chance again in the Premier League – with him expected to be fit for Villa’s clash against Manchester City on the 12th of February.
