Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is a big outsider to be the next Manchester United manager, the bookies have decided.

The Reds Devils sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday, with the Old Trafford club languishing down in 14th place in the Premier League after nine matches.

A United statement read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

Interim boss van Nistelrooy has quickly been installed as the favourite to succeed Ten Hag permanently at 1/2, with Sky Bet, followed by former England manager Gareth Southgate and ex-Barcelona boss Xavi (both 4/1).

Emery, who has been previously linked with the United job when Ten Hag was under pressure at Old Trafford but has a long-term deal at Villa Park, is priced at 50/1 for the job.
