Roy Williams' players went crazy over the gift he got for his 800th win

Only ten other coaches have accomplished what University of North Carolina’s Roy Williams did on Monday night. With the Tar Heels’ 85-68 win over Syracuse, Williams became the 11th coach in college basketball history to notch his 800th career win.

“Two hundred is more impressive than 100, so when you get to 800 not a lot of guys have done that,” Williams told local media after the game. “So I’m human. I’ve got some feelings about those kind of things, and that was nice, but I hope that I get a few more.”

Williams achieved his 800 wins in just 29 seasons and 1,012 games. The only coach to reach this mark faster was Adolph Rupp.

To commemorate the moment, Williams was gifted a custom pair of Jordans signed by Michael Jordan himself. The shiny silver kicks left players bug-eyed and drop-jawed. The shoes were delivered in a wooden box with “800” etched on the outside and “congratulations Roy Williams” etched on the inside.

This is just the latest achievement in Williams’ impressive coaching career. He began his head-coaching career in Kansas and led the Jayhawks to 418 wins and four Final Four appearances. He led North Carolina to national titles in 2005 and 2009 as well as Final Four appearances in 2008 and 2016 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.

Williams joins Mike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight, Dean Smith, Jim Calhoun, Jim Phelan, Rupp, Eddie Sutton, Rollie Massimino, Bob Huggins and Jim Boeheim in the 800 club.

Postgame, Boeheim, who has known Williams for over 40 years, said that Williams is one of the best college coaches to date.

“I told (Williams), ‘You’re almost getting as old as me, that’s how you get to those numbers,'” Boeheim said. “He’s one of the very best basketball coaches to have ever coached in college. There’s no debate about that and he doesn’t need me to say that.

“He’s a good friend of mine, I’m one of the few people who is good friends with the North Carolina coach and the Duke coach, I don’t think anybody can make that claim, at least nobody that lives in this state can make that claim. But, he’s a great coach, a really good guy, I’ve known him a long time, we’ve had a lot of good games against each other.”
