Edinburgh second-row Glen Young has signed a contract extension with the club ahead of Scotland’s summer tour.
Young joined from Premiership side Harlequins at the beginning of this season and has shown promise, earning him a new deal at the DAM Health Stadium-based outfit.
A good fit
The 27-year-old is delighted to have penned a new deal with Edinburgh after enjoying the style of rugby and team culture created by coach Mike Blair this season.
“I’m proper buzzing, I’ve loved it here. It was a tough start being injured but, even then, bonding with this group was great,” Young told the club’s official website.
“When I got back playing, it was brilliant. I’ve loved playing in this jersey, in front of the crowd at DAM Health Stadium. It’s a great place to play and I’ve really enjoyed it.
“I feel like the style fits with how I want to play. I like the way Mike [Blair] coaches too. I enjoy getting my hands on the ball, putting a bit of footwork in and putting a bit of pace into things.”
Young fondly recalls his debut against Cardiff in front of family, and despite no crowd, he felt welcome at the URC club.
“Making my debut against Cardiff was a special moment, there was no crowd but I was lucky to have my family there,” he said.
“I got a really good welcome onto the pitch by the non-playing squad, so even though there wasn’t a crowd, I felt welcomed.
“My family have loved it, my wife and I are both from Jedburgh so we’re really close to home. We’ve both felt really welcome, with the club putting on events for families, so it’s been a seamless transition.”
Having been part of Gregor Townsend’s Scotland squad throughout the Six Nations, Young is hopeful that he will earn his first international cap on the tour of South America.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be named in the Scotland squad. It’s something I’ve been working towards for a really long time,” he continued.
“I’m 27 now, so not a young pup anymore. I was saying to my wife that I was going to try and enjoy it and express myself.
“It’s helpful being at Edinburgh because there are 14 boys going on tour, which makes it slightly less nerve racking.”
Blair meanwhile is delighted with the re-signing of Young and believes he deserves the call-up to the Scotland squad.
“We’ve been really happy with Glen’s contribution this season and we’re excited to see him develop his game further next year. It’s brilliant that he’s extended terms with the club,” he said.
“Glen came back from injury really strong and showcased the kind of athleticism that makes him a game-changing type of player, who is equally adept at lock and six.
“Glen was hugely deserving of his Scotland call-up after a promising end to the season. Hopefully he’ll get the chance to wear the thistle and represent his country this summer.”
