Great Britain’s top young athletes in Artistic Gymnastics, Badminton, Fencing, Football, Judo, Rugby 7s, Shooting, Swimming and Tennis will compete against the best student athletes from across the world this summer, and today the new teamwear has been revealed.
Tom Mitchell (Rugby 7s, Oxford University), Stephanie Cornish (Tennis, University of Bath), James Davis (Fencing, Middlesex University) and Sarah Mckenna (Rugby 7’s, University of Bedfordshire), who are all hoping to be selected to represent Great Britain at the games this summer, were joined by 2011 WUGs Gold medallist Jessica Dickons (Swimming, University of Bath) to showcase the kit designed by Kukri as the countdown to the games continues.
The athletes hope to follow in the footsteps of previous WUGs athletes such as Jessica Ennis, Beth Tweddle, Gemma Gibbons and Michael Jamieson who got their first taste of world class international multisport competition at a World University Games before going on to medal at the Olympic Games.
BUCS, the National Governing Body for Higher Education sport, and Kukri have a long standing partnership which has been extended to design and supply the teamwear for the athletes competing at WUGs this summer. Kukri have 15 years of experience in supplying kit to professional sports teams and have recently been announced Official Kit Supplier to Commonwealth Games England.
BUCS Chief Executive Karen Rothery said: “We are really proud to be able to present the kit, designed by Kukri, that the Great Britain team will be wearing at the World University Games in Kazan later this year. We are delighted with the design of the bespoke kit and know our athletes will be very excited and proud to wear the GBR colours.
BUCS Head of International programmes Neil Rogers said: “The Great Britain teams have a track record of providing elite athletes and staff with their first experience of major games competition and success. We know that the kit is central to the athletes experience and are delighted this with the new teamwear which supports us in our commitment to provide our athletes with the best possible experience”.
Kukri Group Managing Director Phil Morris comments: “We’re delighted to be the Official Teamwear Supplier to Great Britain team at the World University Games. We’re so very passionate that the athletes who wear our kit love it and we believe we’re the natural choice to kit out an elite multisport team. University sport is close to our core and we’re proud to be so involved in the World University Games. We know the British Athletes will look amazing!”
The World University Games is the second largest multisport event in the world, after the Olympic Games, with more than 13,000 participants representing 170 countries expected at this year’s Games in Kazan, Russia. A Great Britain delegation of 175 will take part with athletes competing in Artistic Gymnastics, Badminton, Fencing, Football, Judo, Rugby 7’s, Shooting, Swimming and Tennis.
The athletes selected to represent Great Britain will be announced at the start of June and will receive their kit at the kitting out day on Saturday 8th June at Loughborough University.
