Former India U-19 captain Unmukt Chand has revealed emotionally charged times during his stint in Indian cricket where he felt mentally tortured seeing ‘undeserving’ players get a chance to represent the nation ahead of him.

Chand recently announced his retirement from Indian cricket in order to play for the United States of America (USA). Currently, he is playing for the Silicon Valley Strikers in the Minor League Cricket (MILC).

Chand was playing his trade for Uttarakhand in the 2019-20 season but returned to Delhi in the hopes of playing for his home side more often. Unfortunately, lack of chances forced his hand and he put in his resignation to the BCCI on August 13. While speaking on the matter, Chand divulged that warming the bench for Delhi was painful and he had to take a decision in order to get some game time.

Well yeah, the last couple of years have been a bit tough on me. Last season, I didn’t get a single game for Delhi. And then again, the same regime, I didn’t know whether I’ll get a game again or not.”

There were so many ‘if nots’, concerns with the domestic cricket in India right now. So, I didn’t want to go through the same process, it was mental torture for me to see myself sitting out and XYZ playing the games, who I wouldn’t even consider in my club teams,” Chand was quoted as saying to Sportskeeda.

Having played in 67 first-class matches and more than a hundred List A matches, Chand was experienced enough to represent the Delhi side in the domestic season. Once he realised he had gone out favor, Chand felt it was impractical to stay and hope for a chance.

So, these things happen and the whole purity goes away. It just didn’t make sense and I just didn’t want to waste any more time thinking whether these guys will play or not.

So, when these things start happening, you are just not into it then. Obviously, I have got a limited number of years and I got to play good cricket, and staying in limbo is a very, very bad place to be in,” Chand added.

Chand had led India to the U-19 World Cup title back in 2012. He now hopes to play for the USA team in the next couple of years.
