Everton Fan View: Has Unsworth blown his audition?

David Unsworth has now been in charge of Everton for five matches. In those five matches Everton have been knocked out of the League Cup, the Europa League and gained four points from the three Premier League fixtures. Of course, he can’t really be blamed for the cup exits, but it’s not been the impact he would have hoped to have.

Unsworth is a gentleman, a popular member of the club and has worked wonders for the under-23 side. For these reasons, I desperately wanted him to succeed as the interim Everton manger, but he has struggled to get the Everton players playing as a team.

The players still look lost out there, and not a lot has changed since the sacking of Ronald Koeman. The board too may have been hoping Unsworth could provide them with an easier decision, but surely they still think that the search for a manager must go on.

Already too late for Everton

The board have made a couple of approaches for various managers and the international break would have been a perfect time for a new manager to come in and get used to the workings of the club. The board, however, didn’t act fast enough and the search still goes on with important fixtures to come.

The new manager will still have the same problems with the team, but hopefully with fresh ideas on how he can piece it all together. It’s not been a great season, but we still have no genuine fear of relegation and are in touching distance of the top half of the table.

Unsworth has had his chance to prove himself as manager, but has been unable to grasp it. He was never going to be given long as interim boss, but the instant impact that a club hopes for when they sack a manger hasn’t been there.

I have no doubts that Unsworth will be a permanent football manager sooner or later, but if it’s sooner, it looks unlikely that it will be with Everton. Hopefully he can fulfill his ambitions of management with another club before coming back as the manager of Everton with experience and results somewhere in the future.

For now, it appears that Unsworth has missed his opportunity. It was a very difficult task, but he was always going to be given a short rope. How long he stays in the job will depend on how quickly the board can hire a new manager. It’s still apparent that it needs to be done as soon as possible.
