Loose forward Matt Fagerson is convinced playing for Glasgow Warriors will offer him the best chance to earn a spot on Scotland’s World Cup squad after signing a new deal at Scotstoun.

Fagerson, 23, has 17 appearances for Scotland having made his debut against the USA in Houston, 2018.

World Cup ambition

The 23-year-old has been in Glasgow since 2016 and believes staying at Scotstoun offers him the best chance to catch Gregor Townsend’s eye before the 2023 World Cup in France.

“It’s amazing to be staying at my boyhood club. I’m loving my time with the Warriors and to stay with a club that I feel has real ambition and is starting to build towards something special was a no-brainer,” Fagerson told the Warriors’ official website.

“I want to go to the next World Cup and perform well for Scotland on a regular basis. I believe Glasgow will give me the platform to do that.

“I feel I’m able to continue to develop my game here. I get to work with the likes of Rory [Darge] and Jack [Dempsey] and the coaches are helping me develop the leadership aspect of my game.

“Everybody loves coming into work and the guys give it their all every week, and I’m happy to do the same.

“I can’t wait for what’s ahead.”

Fagerson is the sixth player to pledge himself to the Warriors for next season and head coach Danny Wilson said: “It’s great news that another Scotland international has re-signed with the club.

“Matt came through the academy system here at Glasgow and has really stepped up in recent years.

“He’s been playing well for us and gets through a lot of work in both attack and defence.

“We’re excited to see him continue to take the field in a Warriors jersey.”

Danny Wilson wants clarity on 1872 Cup fixture reshuffle

Meanwhile, Glasgow Warriors head coach Danny Wilson is demanding clarity from the United Rugby Championship as to when their 1872 Cup fixtures will be played.

The hyper-infectious Omicron variant prevented the historical rivalry between Glasgow and Edinburgh from continuing in the traditional festive slot.

The postponement means that both sides would compete in the 1872 Cup without their international players which would take away from the spectacle.

“The team manager has been on the phone trying to find out when these games are going to be rescheduled,” Wilson told The National. “We desperately need to find out because I don’t know if we’re playing the week after next at the moment.

“I don’t know whether we’re giving the boys time off or if we have travel to arrange, and all those sorts of bits and pieces. We’re hoping for confirmation soon.”
