Liverpool star Darwin Nunez managed to get 90 minutes in his legs for Uruguay during their 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Peru.

Nunez has featured sparsely for new boss Arne Slot this term and has scored just one goal in seven Liverpool appearances. However, with Uruguay appealing Nunez's five game international ban he received for an altercation with a fan during their Copa America clash with Colombia this past summer, the Reds star was allowed to play against Peru.

Unfortunately for Nunez and co, they lost 1-0 to Peru, who won the game in the 88th minute through Miguel Araujo. And the reaction in Uruguay's national press perfectly summed up Nunez to a tee.

El Pais gave Nunez a six out of 10 for his performance, noting he looked a threat, but also lacked that clinical touch which has been a consistent issue during his time at Liverpool. They wrote: "He [Nunez] led a great counterattack with a lot of physical power and was the one who came closest to scoring. Good aerial play. He came out of the area very well to look for play and created, at least, fouls. He was the one who tried the most but was very alone in attack."

Meanwhile, El Observador gave Nunez a six out of 10 rating. They wrote in their match ratings: "After 11 minutes he was the protagonist of a great counterattack that Valverde was unable to transform into a goal-scoring opportunity.

"Two minutes later he won the ball with a header in the area and the goalkeeper got the shot. He tried but was stifled in his intentions because they never played into his hands enough to change the score."

Nunez will be handed another opportunity to lead the line for Uruguay next week when they face off against Ecuador. Marcelo Bielsa's side currently sit third in the South American World Cup qualifying table, with Argentina and Colombia sitting first and second respectively.

Liverpool.com says: "It's good Nunez was able to get some minutes in his legs ahead of returning to Anfield next week. Games are set to come thick and fast for the Reds in the coming weeks, with Liverpool playing Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Arsenal, and Brighton in their four remaining October games. They will almost certainly rotate their frontline during some of those games, meaning Nunez will need to be ready to lead the line in the place of Diogo Jota at some point."
