The three top British players in the US Open men’s draw have found themselves in world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz’s quarter after the main draw was held on Thursday.

Alcaraz will start his US Open title defence against Germany’s Dominik Koepfer with either Guido Pella or Lloyd Harris awaiting the winner of the clash at the top of the draw.

Dan Evans, who was seeded 26th could be the third round opponent for Alcaraz who could also meet Brits in the fourth round when he is seeded to clash with Cameron Norrie and in the last eight.

Andy Murray would do well to reach that last eight match which seems to be written in the stars for Toronto Champion Jannik Sinner who is seeded to face Alcaraz in the last eight.

However, the sixth-seeded Sinner faces a difficult road to that quarter as previous US Open winners Murray and Stan Wawrinka are also in the Italian’s section of the draw, along with 12th seed Alexander Zverev and 20th seed Grigor Dimitrov. In the first round, Sinner will take against Yannick Hanfmann, and in the third round, he may meet Wawrinka. A second round match between Murray and Dimitrov is also on the cards.

Third seed Daniil Medvedev joins Alcaraz in the top half and headlines the second quarter.

The 2021 US Open champion Medvedev shown his adaptability this year by winning his first ATP Masters 1000 clay-court championship in Rome and making the Wimbledon semifinals. On his favoured hard courts, he had his finest runs earlier in the season when he won four championships and reached five straight finals, including those in Indian Wells (runner-up) and Miami (winner).

Attila Balazs will be Medvedev’s opponent in the US Open’s opening round after the Russian finished with a mediocre 3-2 record in Toronto and Cincinnati. The second round will feature one of two Australians, Max Purcell or Christopher O’Connell, before a possible matchup with the 27th seed Borna Coric or 2017 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori in the third round awaits in the No 3 seed can endure.

In a difficult opening matchup against Emil Ruusuvuori, who defeated eighth seed Andrey Rublev last week in Cincinnati in a third-set tiebreak, the Russian No 2 has a chance to exact retribution. After missing the US Open in 2022, Gael Monfils is returning at the tournament and will play a qualifier in the first round. In the second round, he may play the winner of Rublev-Ruusuvuori showdown.

The 29th seed Ugo Humbert will play 2019 New York semifinalist Matteo Berrettini in another interesting opening clash.

American John Isner will play Facundo Diaz Acosta in the first round of his last event.

Holger Rune and Casper Ruud, Nordic rivals, are at opposite ends of the third quarter and may face off for the seventh time in the quarterfinals. Rune of Denmark will play Roberto Carballes Baena in the opening round, and Ruud of Norway, a three-time major finalist, will face a qualifier to start.

This quarter also includes three seeded Americans in Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and Seb Korda and also includes home hopes Ben Shelton, J.J. Wolf, Marcos Giron, and Learner Tien. Tiafoe and Tien clash in an all-American opener.

Novak Djokovic anchors the draw as the second seed and faces Frenchman Alexandre Muller in the opening round.

Djokovic’s expected fourth-round opponent is Felix Auger-Aliassime, but the 15th-seeded Canadian must first defeat an in-form Mackenzie McDonald. In Toronto earlier this month, the American defeated Rublev on the route to reaching his first quarterfinal in the Masters 1000.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, who unexpectedly lost to Daniel Elahi Galan in the first round last year in New York, will face Milos Raonic in this year’s opening round. In his sixth appearance in the main draw, Greece’s Tsitsipas, the seventh seed, hopes to make it beyond the third round in New York for the first time.

Another all-American clash pits Fritz against fellow countryman Steve Johnson, while Chris Eubanks takes on Soonwoo Kwon in an effort to build on his impressive run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
